What is the Translation Journal?
by: Gabe Bokor
The Translation Journal is a publication dealing with topics related to industrial translation and the problems faced by professional translators. It intends to build on the tradition of the Sci-Tech Translation Journal of the American Translators Association, with which I was associated for 10 years as a contributor, desktop publisher, and editor, and offer the translator community a quality publication dealing with both technical and business aspects of our profession. This Journal was to appear on the World-Wide Web under the ægis of the ATA and hosted by ATA’s Web server. Unfortunately, however, we were unable to solve some problems concerning the mechanism of file uploads by the editor.
I believe that, by taking the Journal beyond the ATA and its Science and Technology Division, we are taking advantage of the opportunities offered by this international medium, expanding both our readership and potential circle of contributors. We intend to make use of the incredible amount of translator talent in the most diverse fields of human endeavor and the proven generosity of translators in sharing their knowledge with their colleagues. One of the main purposes of this publication is to give this talent and generosity the worldwide exposure they deserve. In this spirit and within the constraints of a not-for-profit venture, we will do our best to provide free translations of contributions submitted in languages other than English. We will also keep this publication open for debates on topics of general interest to the translator community.
No effort has been spared to make the Translation Journal attractive-looking and easy-to-read when viewed with the most popular browsers; at the same time, it has been designed to load quickly even with slower Web connections. It is, however, the nature of this medium that pages, in particular colors and layouts, appear differently to readers using different browsers, monitors, and computers. Please let me know if you have difficulty in reading the text so the appropriate adjustments can be made. If you wish to print out any page of the TJ, set your printer options to black-and white, rather than grayscale, unless you have a color printer.
And finally, an emphatic appeal to all: This Journal does not belong to its Editor. It belongs to all translators and depends on their knowledge and generosity in sharing it to survive. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you wish to contribute to the Journal. Articles, together with a short bio of the author, can be submitted in any major word-processed format through e-mail. Send along a color photo of yours via regular mail or via e-mail in TIFF, GIF, Photoshop, or JPEG format. You’ll find the Editor’s contact information on the home page.
Come back often to check for updates and new information, which will be added to the Journal on an ongoing basis.
